TriCounty Independt Living Center

What is Independent Living?

Independent Living is control over one's life, including managing all aspects of their affairs where they live, work and play. Tri-County helps individuals with disabilities to maximize choices and minimize reliance on others. A person who is independent decides what services they receive , if any, and directs their daily living activities.

Who is eligible for services?

Any individual with a severe physical or mental impairment whose ability to function independently in the family or community or whose ability to obtain, maintain, or advance in employment is substantially limited and for whom the delivery of independent living services will improve the ability to function, continue functioning, or move towards functioning independently in the family or community or to continue in employment, respectively.

Independent Living History

Tri-County is one of the independent living enters which has a deep history influenced by the self-help movement, legislation such as Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA), and sociological research. Persons with disabilities have fought hard for the right to live, work and play like their non-disabled neighbors. Many barriers exist that make these civil rights harder for disabled Americans. The Center is dedicated to helping individuals identify and remove these barriers.
